Abstract

The gross morphometrics of the skull and mandible of the Philippine water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) with special reference to anatomical sites for local and regional anesthesia of the head. Twenty-five heads of Philippine water buffaloes from apparently healthy animals without skeletal deformities were sampled. Five heads were used for infraorbital and mental nerve demonstration and radiography. Forty-nine and 16 gross morphological measurements were obtained on all 25 PH water buffalo skulls and mandibles, respectively. Obtained measurements were analyzed using simple descriptive statistics. Sample measurements include the skull length (42.2 ± 1.38 cm), mandibular length (35.1 ± 1.34 cm), and horncore basal circumference (16.9 ± 1.58 cm). Craniofacial indices were computed such as the skull index (42.5 ± 1.79%). Using the obtained measurements, nerve blocking procedures were demonstrated using India ink on a freshly-slaughtered head. Good spread of injected ink around the nerve blocking sites was achieved thus confirming the accuracy of the applied anatomical landmark measurements. The measurements obtained will serve as baseline data for establishing breed standards and can serve as a guide during local and regional anesthesia around the head of the Philippine water buffalo.
