Abstract

Significant competition effects can be sources of errors in the evaluation of the performance of crop varieties grown together. In sweet potato, the degree of competition effects primarily on the yield, and on the percentage marketable roots, dry matter yield, starch content and B-carotene content was studied by growing four varieties with varying growth habit and leaf characteristics in plots differing in the type of border.

Statistical analysis of the results showed that the effects of competition were not significant for all the characters that were studied and that no correlation exists between these five plant characters and the competitive ability of the varieties used.
