Abstract

The farm practice was conducted in Barangay Villabuena, Sta. Maria Isabela during the summer of 2000 to analyze and improve the productivity of the farm using the sustainable agriculture framework. The biophysical, sociocultural, and socio-economic determinants of productivity were analyzed. Problems and constraints influencing the agroecosystem were documented and analyzed to provide appropriate technological interventions to improve the agricultural production of the community.

Degraded soil, occurence of pests and diseases, dependency on chemical inputs and limited technological options limit the agricultural production in the area. The inaccessibility of the area hinders expansion of its market. Practices like relay cropping and crop notation could alleviate problems on agricultural production. The presence of institution like the Community Development Center-Saint Paul University can provide credit to finance efforts forward long-term development of the farm.

Technological interventions such as increase crop productivity, bio-intensive gardening, composting, alternative pest management, backyard animal production and training on alternative pest management and farm diversification were recommended to augment present farmers' condition. Crops suitable in the area were identified and leadership-training program was recommended in order to increase productivity and to develop better social interactions, respectively. To increase yield and to develop better social interactions, these interventions and programs can only be achieved through cooperation and participation of the community and the government institutions including the non-government organizations.
