Abstract

A preliminary study was conducted in the upland area of the University of the Philippines, College of Agriculture, Central Experiment Station from October, 1966 to February, 1967 to determine the effects of different concentrations of Maleic hydrazide 30 (0,2500 and 500 ppm) on stored cassava planting materials under field and shade conditions at five stalk preparations.

Storage condition and stalk preparation significantly affected the number of days to first sprouting. There was significant interactions and between storage condition and MH 30 concentrations and between storage condition and stalk preparation. There was no sprouting of the entire stalk after removing the storage roots (SP2) and the entire stalk after removing the storage roots and youngest portion (one foot below last leaf scar) removed (SP5) at 0 to 5000 ppm MH treatments.

The percentage of sprouted stalks was also affected significantly by storage condition and stalk preparation. Lower percentage of sprouting was noted on the stalks stored under the shade. There was a significant interaction between storage condition and stalk preparation, MH concentrations significantly affected this character at the 5% level. There was no interaction between MH concentration and storage condition.

The length of sprouts was not affected by either storage conditions and MH concentration or their interaction.

The recovery sprouted cutting was affected by storage condition at the 5% level. Sprouted cutting from stalks stored in the field gave a lower percentage recovery than those from stalks stored in the shade. there was highly significant effect of stalks preparation on this character. No significant interactions observed among the different variables.
