Abstract

Many foreign and local studies have been conducted regarding the valuation of different recreational sites. In the Philippines none so far have been made to value the recreational benefit of Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center (NAPWC), making this study the first in the country. Apart from computing the consumer surplus, the method applied derived from Individual Travel Cost Method using the linear demand function model and OLS estimation was used as a tool in determining the possibility of increasing the entrance fee to the site. This is to capture the operational cost of maintaining and improving the quality of the site as a recreational area. This study showed that the factors that influence the visitors’ demand for NAPWC includes household head’s gender and civil status, age, travel cost and the price of the alternative site. Results showed that at the average travel cost, the average number of visits would be 3.94 per year. The increase in entrance fee that would maximize the profit of NAPWC was computed at Php20.The result showed that if NAPWC would raise its entrance fee from Php8 to Php20, the change would result to a reduction in consumer surplus from Php50.91 to Php27.90 and the yearly profit would increase to Php12,636,000.00 per year.
