Abstract
The optimum sample size and best sampling design in sugarcane field experiments were determined in a sampling study conducted at the central experiment Station, UPLB College of Agriculture, College, Laguna, from January to October, 1978. Random, center strip, quadrat, and stratified sampling methods were employed. The optimum sample size was directly influenced by the variability of the plant character. Different growth stages manifested various levels of variability in plant height and tiller count
The choice of sampling design has influence on the magnitude of variation that can be obtained in the measurement of plant characters. The relative efficiencies of the designs over one another varied for each plant character. On the average however, center strip sampling of 1 meter by 10 stools was the most efficient while random sampling was the least. furthermore the former incurred the least cost, hence much advantage is gained by adopting this sampling method in sugarcane field experiments.
