Abstract
The effect of addition of Jatropha curcas L. roots and leaves methanolic extract on the oxidation stability of Jatropha curcas L. methyl ester biodiesel was determined using Rancimat Method. The methanolic extract was investigated for effect of soaking time on its total polyphenolic content using Folin Ciocalteau Assay. It was found that 6 hours soaking time was the suited for Jatropha curcas L. roots while 12 hours is best for Jatropha curcas L. leaves. The methanolic extract was loaded to Jatropha curcas L. methyl ester biodiesel. At 125 ppm, the oil stability index for the biodiesel loaded with Jatropha curcas L. root extract yielded approximately one hour. Due to low oil stability and low concentration of polyphenols, the study shifts to leaves. The Jatropha curcas L. leaves methanolic extract was loaded to methyl ester biodiesel at varying concentration. It was found that concentration greater than 2604 ppm, the oil stability index will reached the minimum six hour standard set by EN 14214. It was also compared to a commercial antioxidant which is the Baynox Plus. The commercial antioxidant passed the standard at 1666.67 ppm. Cost analysis was also done and the result showed that the Jatropha curcas L. leaves extract is competitive with Baynox Plus.
