Abstract

A farm practice was conducted in four barangays of Alaminos City, Pangasinan from April to May 2009. The study aimed to characterized the biophysical, socio-cultural, and economic conditions of the community, document and analyze the existing farming practices of vegetable farmers and have hands-on experience on actual farming, identify the problems and needs related to vegetable production and provide recommendations to improve vegetable production. Study methods included interviews, focused group discussion, field observations and data analysis.

Vegetable production is one of the sources of income of Alaminos City farmers. After rice, farmers commonly grow ampalaya, tomato, pepper pole sitao, okra, eggplant and squash which are main ingredients for the local dish "pinakbet" The study showed that most farmers use a combination of chemical and organic inputs to increase yield. They are influenced by the programs, projects, seminars and trainings conducted by City Agriculture Office (CAO) of Alaminos City. The study also revealed that the problems encountered by farmers included lack of irrigation facilities, pest attack, nearness of farm to the market, high input cost, fluctuating prices of the produce and the occurrence of extreme conditions. Composting, crop rotation, intercropping, ratooning and water impounding systems were recommended
