Abstract

Sphenocles zeylanica Gaertn. Showed a rapid increase in the vegetative growth from the second week up to the eight week after transplanting. Flowers were produced 35-70 days after transplanting. Seed germination was induced using GA3 and KNO3 at 1.0 and 10.0 ppm. Germination was increased by heating the seeds at 40 degree celsius for 30 minutes. Germination period was also shortened by the treatment.

The result of the experiment showed that S. zeylanica is a competitive weed when there was a 1:1 ratio between rice and S. zeylanica. This showed that control actions must be taken before the density of rice and S. zeylanica reached a 1:1 ratio.
