Abstract

Immature seeds of soybean were capable of germination at a low rate. Germination increased with maturity to a maximum, at which stage seed moisture content was about 20 percent. At this stage maximum dry weight was obtained. The point at which maximum germination and dry weight were obtained was 56-57 days from pollination in the wet season and 44-48 days in the dry season depending on the variety.

Seedling vigor was closely related to the dry weight of seeds; thus the mature seeds produced more vigorous seedlings than the immature ones.

Mature seeds had longer viability under ordinary room storage conditions than less mature ones. After 5 months viability was either completely lost or very poor.
