Abstract

Fourteen brachytic dwarf composites developed by the UPCA corn breeders were tested during the 1971 and 1972 wet seasons at College, Laguna and 1972 wet season at Ilagan, Isabela to evaluate their yield performance and to determine the relationship of their agronomic characters with yield.

Yield performance of the 14 brachytic dwarf composites is comparable with UPCA Var 1, the normal check variety. [(Cupurico x Flint Composite Amarillo) Tuxepeño br2br2_]#4 and [(Flint Composite Amarillo x Cupurico) Tuxpeñobr2br2_]#4 gave normally higher grain yield than UPCA Var 1.

Among the agronomic characteristics studied, days to tasseling, days to silking and number of internodes were significantly correlated with yield. The first two characters showed negative correlation )r= -0.498658, r = 0.736878, r = 0.555445, respectively), with yield, that is, yields tended to decrease as the brachytic dwarf composites tasseled or silked late.

The number of internodes was significantly positively correlated (r = 0.555445) with yield. The more internodes there were the higher was the yield.
