Abstract

The special problem is a practicum at R. Jorgensons Swine Multiple Corporation, a breeder farm for New Dailand breed at San Mateo, Rizal. The study aims to be involved in the management of a swine breeder farm and learn the skills and technical know-how in its management practices. The focus of the study is the functional area od production. The practicum student trained for manual and supervisory works in different production sections namely breeding, farrowing, rearing/fattening, and veterinary sections. The actual experiences and insights gained in the different sections were compared with selected standard practices and developments. Some deviations of the actual from the standard practices is brought about by the transfer of the technology. The farm had adopted Dutch know-how and improved genetic engineering in its operations. The main problem is the waste disposal of the farm. The lagoon is nearly filled to capacity after only two years of operation. One possible solution to this problem is biogas production. An offshoot study on biogas production was made and found out to be feasible. Future practicum students can do further study on the impact of hog importation on the industry concentrating on efforts on production, technology transfer and pricing.
