Abstract
The simulated distillery slop was tested using three parameters: presence of light, catalyst loading and pH to determine which conditions will give the maximum degradation of organic and inorganic materials at 20x dilution. Highest color reduction of 33.65% was measured for the catalysis under solar exposure using the optimum catalyst loading of 50 g titanium dioxide mixed with 50 mL both of water and BOYSENTM Gloss Latex Paint in Burnt Sienna. Two controls were used which were the plain paint and glass alone. It was found out that the most favorable pH for the process is at pH 4 (no adjustment) with color reduction of 31.11%. However the values obtained for different levels of pH were not significantly different from each other as what the analysis of variance at 5% level of confidence shows. With the best conditions identified, photocatalysis was conducted using non- concentrating batch flow reactor which gave an 8.06% color reduction and a COD decrease of 21.03%. Using Microsoft Office Excel trend lines were fit to the graphs made and equations were generated which were necessary in determining the kinetic parameters; rate constant k = 2.5535-3/min and 5.5096-3/min, and order of reaction n = 1 for color and COD reduction respectively. The integration method was also utilized, in which the kinetic parameters calculated were k = 3.5394x10-4/min and n = 1 for color reduction and k = 9.1497x10 -4/min and n = 1 for COD reduction.
