Abstract

The B.S. Agribusiness Management Program of the University of the Philippines Los Baños has been in existence for almost three decades. There have been many revisions in the curriculum since it was first introduced to meet the needs for a more relevant and reliable program. The study was undertaken in order to develop a plan that will support the entrepreneurial competency-based aproach for UPLB's B.S. Agribusiness Management Program. The study was conducted to specifically achieve the following objectives; provide a profile of the entreprenurial background of B.S. Agribusiness students; present an assessment of BSABM; determine the extent of actual practice; determine the necessity of one semester practicum; described the preferred sequencing of courses; present the alternative program designs; assessment of these designs based on perceived competencies; and determine how much resources would be needed in implementing each of the design. A total of 110 respondents were surveyed. The data were gathered through the pre-tested questionnaire and were analyzed using frequency counting, percentage distribution, averaging, ranking information, scaling approach and descriptive analysis. Interviews were also conducted to elicit responses on specific information relative to the objectives of the study. The study revealed that majority of the B.S. Agribusiness students were not able to organize their own business while studying. For those students who tried, mostly have ventured into agribusiness enterprises. There were students who participated in their perspective family business. Electives related to Management and Agriculture were considered the best in enhancing the Entrepreneurial Competencies of the students. General Education courses were regarded as the least capable of enhancing the Entrepreneurial Competencies of the students. Incorporation of the practicum application activities were proposed by many students, In fact, they believed that it is necessary to have a one semester practicum course rather than conducting a Special Problem. The students would like to have changes in the sequencing of the subjects. There are some courses which they think should be taken earlier than the originally scheduled by the curriculum such as Management 101,111. Agribusiness Management 103. Alternative programs were designed and evaluated based on the descriptions of each design. It was find out that the present curriculum was the least favored. Majority preferred the program which conducts a Practicum Course rather than a Special Problem. The study proved that entrepreneurial will be enhanced once a practicum course will be implemented. However, on the initial phase of adopting the course, much resource in land and business facilities as well as fixed and working capital will be needed.
