Abstract

Foliage plants have never been given so much attention unlike the cutflowers and yet, the foliage growing and trading business is presently emerging as one of the prime business ventures in the ornamental isdustry. The study was conducted to analyze the sector in terms of economic contribution to the local economy, the different marketing and pricing techniques being employed. the key factors affecting the growth of the business, the problem encountered and solutions adopted by the growers, through the use of primary and secondary data, and in the end, formulating recommendations designed to improve the current situation. Primary data were gathered from selected areas of known high concentration of growers such as Bucal and Bagong Kalsada, Calamba, Laguna. Analyses of the non-quantitative data were mainly descriptive, while for the quantitative data, frequency counts were applied. In the study, it was determined that the foliage growing and trading business has been a rewarding source of income. It was generated employment for about 100 persons. The cottage scale level of operations is predominant in the business. The growers cited the marketing is one of the most critical problem in the business due to the stiff competition. It was also determined that there are two types of entrepreneurs operating in CAlamba and these are the pure growers and the grower-middlemen. The study revealed that the grower middlemen are earning more in the business compared to the pure growers because they are the ones with specialization in producing specific groups of plants and rare plants. Prospective investors are advised to produce rare plants and specialize in the specific groups of plants due to their demand and high prices. The marketing of foliage plants may be improved by forming cooperative and associations so as to insure a steady supply of foliage plants and better interrelationships between the growers.
