Abstract

The farm practice was conducted at F1 Ferrari Farms Inc., at Brgy. San Juan, Sta. Cruz, Laguna from April 26, 2010 to May 26, 2010. The objectives of the farm practice were for the student to be able to apply the concepts and principles in swine management acquired in the university; to participate in the operation in a commercial scale production; to be familiar with the actual operations in a commercial scale production system; to identify and experience actual problems arising in a commercial farm and formulate possible solutions and alternatives to resolve the dilemma and to attain confidence and supervisory skills in operating a swine farm. There were four major sections in the farm: Feed mill section, Farrowing and Nursery section, Breeding section and Growing-finishing section. The student was assigned to the different section for one week. He was able to participate to the different farm activityies like preparation of the raw materials used in mixing, mixing of the feeds, packing, cleaning of pens, feeding of the animals, assisting farrowing sows, cutting the needle teeth, tail docking, ear notching, assisting the piglets to suck colostrums, injection of iron, vaccination and medication, castration, heat detection, natural mating, artificial insemination and record keeping. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats were discussed and possible solutions to the problems encountered and recommendations were formulated.
