Abstract

A thriving industry in Laguna is the "Pasalubong Food Products" processing which included confectioneries and native delicacies. This industry developed due to the availability of food crops in the locality and as a complement to the tourist industry in Laguna. This industry proliferated particularly in the towns of Nagcarlan, Rizal, Los Baños and Calamba where the study was conducted. Pasalubong Products considered in the study were buko pie, espasol, macapuno candies, pastillas buko, polvoron and peanut brittle. Major data were acquired through personal interviews with entrepreneurs using a predetermined questionnaire. Frequency and percentages were the tools used to analyze the data. Topics discussed in the study were the following: (1) Background of entrepreneurs which included age, sex, marital status, place of birth, educational attainment, trainings attended, membership in organizations and occupational background; (2) Rationale for establishing and initial attributes for establishing the enterprises; (3) Current attributes of the enterprises such as asset size, nature of family involvement, institution registered with, nature of the business decisions and the number of workers employed; (4) contributions to local economy in terms of employment generated, taxes paid and ventures devised; (5) marketing aspect of the industry such as demand for pasalubong products, the geographical target market, the distribution channels utilized, pricing policies, price and mark-ups, terms of payment by distributors, sales discounts given, promotions utilized, competition conditions and the other product lines; (6) production aspect which touched on raw materials and packaging used, production cost, sources of raw materials, terms and methods of payment, production process followed, tools and equipment used and production capacity; (7) personnel which stated the number of working days and manner of compensation payment followed by entrepreneurs; (8) sources of business ideas for introducing new products, improving old products, adopting cost cutting measures, and adopting efficiency techniques (9) operational problems; (10) measures adopted by entrepreneurs to overcome problems; (11) Training assistance needs from the government; and lastly (12) future plans of entrepreneurs regarding the business. Michael Porter's model of industry analysis, resource and environment analysis were also included in the study to analyze the enterprises and its environment. finally, recommendations; how to make the industry more viable as well as steps which the government can undertake to help entrepreneurs and further improve the industry were also included in this study.
