Abstract

The study entitled "A Case Study of a Diversified Livestock and Poultry Farm" was conducted to analyze and present the overall farm performance and conditions being experienced by such a type of farm. The farm was engaged in contract growing and beef/cattle and backyard piggery. Specifically, the study aimed 1) determine the viability and efficiency of each commodity in the farm. 2) provide an insight on the management system of a diversified farm. 3) analyze and present the relationship of each commodity and how they affect each other, 4) identify problems that beset the farm and provide viable recommendations. the study was conducted in Brgy. San Isidro, Sto. Tomas, Batangas. Primary data were collected through interviews with the farm managers as well as with some of the personnel of the integrators. The viability and efficiency of each commodity were determined through the use of financial ratios such as liquidity ratios. asset management ratios and profitability ratios. A major problem was encountered by the farm regarding its beef/cattle production. Monterey Farms Corporation phased out their contract growing scheme which eventually stopped the supply of cattle to the farm. Investment in the said enterprise was not fully recovered. A P200,000 cost of capital and opportunity cost was demanded by the farm manager but the possibility of retrieving the said amount was very low due to some provisions lacking in the contract agreement. Expansion in the broiler production was not allowed by the San Miguel Corporation due to its closure for expansion in Southern Tagalog. these problems of the Sanchez Farm had caused a tremendous effect on its level of productivity, and profitability. From the problems pointed out, a viable recommendation was derived which was to convert the beef/cattle corral into a pigpen. The pen will serve as an extension pen for hogs which are soon to be marketed. Expansion for swine was chosen over other livestock business due to its relatively higher efficiency and profitability. Other livestock enterprises were not recommended due to constraints (contract agreements, financing, social and environmental conditions, etc.) which rendered the enterprise difficult and even impossible to invest in.
