Abstract

Cooperative is one of the effective strategy to attain economic growth and equitable distribution of income. It is expected to serve its members efficiently and advance their economic interest by maintaining and protecting their economic independence. This would be possible by balancing their weakness through pooling of resources thus achieving economies of scale. Escribano Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Inc. was established by fifteen coporators with the assistance of the department of Agrarian Reform. The cooperative was formally registered with the Cooperative Development Authority on Jyly 4, 1991. Their purpose is to uplift the lives of every individual in Barangay Escribano and other adjacent Barangays. One of the successful project of the DAR is the provision of the post harvest facilities in the area to increase the productivity level and decrease spoilage of the produce of the members. The purpose of the study is to analyze the case of EMPCI in terms of the four functional areas of management mainly the production/operations, marketing, personnel and finance and to formulate feasible solutions of its problem. Specifically, it aimed to ; 1) present a profile of the cooperative and its members, Board of Directors and management staff, 2) evaluate the management practices being implemented in the organization 3) evaluate its strength and weaknesses/ opportunities and threats of the cooperative and 4) give recommendations to maintain and/or improve the present operations. Low sales and profit is the major problem of the cooperative. This should be attributed to the lack of knowledge and skills of the management staff, Board of Directors and committee in handling and managing that the operations of the cooperative. Another factor is the absence of effective loan repayment scheme, inefficient utilization of assets, lack of market and inadequate funds. Regarding the problems, the study recommended the following courses of actions: 1) implementation of an effective credit collection scheme, 2) formation of a guidance and advisory board, and 3) exploration of other potential markets for the product and adopt product improvement strategies.
