Abstract
Mutation are sudden heritable changes in an organism's genetic material regarded as detrimental alternatives in plant breeder's search for novel traits that can be useful in his crop improvement program.
A research internship on mutation breeding was conducted from April to June 2008 at the Agricultural Research Group - Atomic Research Division (ARG-ARD) of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) with this objectives: to know the procedures and gain experience on mutation breeding of crop plants. Radiosensitivity studies were also conducted to observe and measure the effects of some mutagenic agents to plants.
At the end of the internship, the intern had learned about the procedures employed in mutation breeding, had an opportunity to participate on the activities done by the institution in mutation breeding of agronomic and horticultural crops, able to see the equipments used for irradiation of plant materials, realized that mutagenic treatment of seeds resulted to grow reduction in the plants, and able to experience procedures in the laboratory (e.g. reflasking and tissue culture) not commonly offered when working on "conventional" breeding of agronomic crops.
