Abstract

A farm practice to document and analyze the physical, biological, economic, socio-cultural and political conditions and other externalities of the agroecosystem of Barangay Batiawan. Floridablanca, Pampanga was conducted from April 18-27, 1994. The barangay which is located in the tri-boundary of Pampanga, Zambales, and Bataan and composed of fourteen sitios, is part of what the aetas claim as ancestral domain. Such claims though is still under dispute because the government has not recognized the tribal group's claim.

During the course of data collection, Malipano, an all-Aeta sitio of the barangay emerged as a distinct entity in itself due to the fact that the Aetas are the original owners of the land being occupied by the settlers of Barangay Batiawan. This condition created some distinct agricultural practices and very fragile relationship between the Atlas of Malipano and the settlers of Batiawan Sentro.

Data analysis was based on published literature and consultation with knowledgeable people on the subject. From all the data, an agricultural rehabilitation and development program using the sustainable agriculture framework for the barangay was proposed. The program was divided into short- medium- and long-term recommendations. All these recommendations will come to naught if the landownership issue in Bgy. Batiawan is not settled since farmers are reluctant to introduced improvements on the land that they do not own.
