Abstract

All red rice obtained from five upland and six lowland varieties were found to be varietal mixtures based on morphological and agronomic comparisons with white rice. The red rice obtained from Binicol and Makapuno, two upland varieties, were proven to be true strains of these varieties. Morphological evidences also show that the red rice S. K. 36 Sir. 482 is a sub-strain of the variety.

All the sample of red rice tested showed greater shattering characteristics than white rice.

The red strains of Binicol and Makapuno had a greater seed dormancy than their corresponding white strains. There was, however, no significant difference in the ability of the red and white strains to germinate when planted in different in different depths of soil.
