Abstract

The major practice was conducted at the Office of the Provincial Agriculture of Laguna in Brgy. Callos, Sta Cruz, Laguna during the summer of 2009. The corn production practices of the farmers were documented and the provincial government's corn production program was assessed. Primary data were gathered through interviews with corn farmers while secondary data were sources from provincial and municipal records. Recommendations to improve the corn program were provided.

The corn farmers of Laguna employ good cultural management practices. Most of them subject their soil to analysis, apply organic fertilizer and control pets using biological control agents. Survey data revealed that corn production is a profitable business but the presence of buying stations in the province will benefit the farmers more.

The provincial government promotes and supports the corn program in the province. It provides subsidies to the farmers like seeds, fertilizer, equipments/tools like shellers and dryers and loans. The program has high impact the familiarity of the farmers to corn production and its impact to food supply were identified as possible constraints to the program. The success of the program depends on the willingness of the farmers to learn and adopt technical knowledge and skills on corn production, support from the local government, municipal agriculturists and technicians and other sectors.

Improvement on the program dissemination and marketing assistance were recommended to help more farmers their marketing knowledge and skills.
