Abstract

The major practice was conducted from April to October 2010 in a 0.75 ha allotted to irrigated lowland rice production rice production and long-term fertilizer experiment (LTFE) at the Central Experiment Station (CES). The production management practices in the production area and in the LTFE were observed and documented. Primary data were gathered through field visits, while secondary data were obtained from LTFE Projected records.

The irrigated lowland rice production and the LTFE Project employ good cultural management practices. Preparations done from seed preparation to postharvest were done properly. The student learned a lot on lowland rice production practices during the field exposure. The long-term fertilizer experiment consisted of six treatments, namely: i) inorganic fertilizer alone at recommended level (RIF); (ii) commercial organic fertilizer (OF) alone at manufacturer's recommend level iii) 75% RIF + 25% OF; iv) 50% OF; v) 25% RIF + 75% OF; and vi) no fertilizer (control). Four varieties, PSB Rc32, 'Bardagol', 'Sampaguita' and 'Sinandomeng', were grown under the six fertilizer treatments.

High grain yield was obtained under inorganic fertilizer treatment. However, net return and return investment (ROI) was highest at 50% RIF + 50% OF. The best fertilizer level and combination for maximum growth and yield during 2010 wet season was 50% RIF + 50% OF. The student learned the importance of balancing the productivity, profitability and sustainability of lowland rice production through combined use of inorganic and organic fertilizer.
