Abstract

The major practice was conducted at the Genebank of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) at Los Baños Laguna from the end of first semester SY 2009-2010 up to summer of 2010. The various activities and the laboratory procedures undertaken in the Genebank were documented and the overall situation was assessed using Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis. Primary data were gathered through interviews and direct involvement in the activities. Secondary data were collected from the existing records of the involved units.

The IRRI Genebank was considered the world's largest repository of rice genetic diversity. they ensure the longevity, Viability and availability of the genetic resources that are needed for rice improvement and research. The student practitioner participated in the activities in the six areas related to genebank and procedure namely: (1) germplasm conservation, (2) seed production (3) germplasm characterization, (4) germplasm screen house nursery, (5) data management, and (6) germplasm exchange.

Based on the SWOT analysis, one of the strengths of IRRI Genebank is it is manned by experts and skilled workers who perform different Genebank operations and help in maintaining germplasm. Although they are equipped to handle large volumes of seed samples, accumulation of a number of accessions in the Genebank without proper characterization considered a limitation. The IRRI Genebank essentially rice genetic resources and delivers the right germplasm to each user. Genebank serves not only Filipino farmers but the whole world, they have a strong research and extension systems because they gained much of support from non government organizations (NGOs).

The student practitioner recommends that for the future major practice students who will be assigned to the Genebank, more skills in seed authentication and hands on experience in processing of incoming and outgoing materials for both local and overseas should be undertaken.
