Abstract

Twenty-five wheat selections (Triticum aestivum L.) composed of local breeding lines and newly introduced varieties were planted at four different dates starting December 14, 1977 and approximately every other week thereafter at the Central Experiment Station, University of the Philippines at Los Banos. Number of productive tillers, number of grains per ear, and 1000-grain weight declined with late planting. dumber of fertile spikelets per ear and harvest index ware also low in the late-sown crops. In addition, late planting Shortened the planting to heading period as well as the maturity of the crop. Of the yield components and agronomic characters studied, most affected by late planting was the number of grains per ear and plant height the least. The rest of the plant characters studied more or less followed the same trend of decline with lateness of planting. The adverse effect of late planting, could be attributed to in-creasing temperature as the growing season progresses, a condition unfavorable to the growth of the wheat crop.
