Abstract

The critical reproductive phase of rice, var C166-133, In relation to muddy water submergence was determined using a pot experiment. Seedlings were raised in a wet bed and transplanted to pots twenty-one days after sowing. Normal cultural practices were followed throughout the growing period. Submergence was done during panicle initiation, booting, flowering, and milk phases at approximately 50%, 75% of the plants' height and full submergence (100%). A set of control plants was also included. The total dry weight of straw. Total number of tillers per pot, number of productive tillers per pot, total number of spikelets per pot, number of filled grains per pot, 500-grain weight per pot and total grain weight were determined after harvest.

Flowering of rice, var C166, was delayed by eleven to fourteen days in plants submerged to depths of 75% to 100% heights at panicle. initiation.

Percent productive tillers decreased under complete submergence during the early reproductive stage. Full submergence at the flowering phase significantly increased the percent unfilled grains. Increasing depths of submergence at all reproductive phases caused remarkable reduction in 500-grain weight the rice plants. Grain-straw ratio decreased at 75% to 100% depths during the flowering phase.

Grain yield was remarkably reduced at 75%. to complete submergence in muddy water during the flowering phase. Submergence during the panicle initiation, booting and milk phases was not as detrimental as during the flowering phase.
