Abstract

Reaction to smut (Ustilago scitaminea) and downy mildew (Sclerospora sacchanea) of twenty-six foreign sugarcane clones were evaluated. Two local varieties Phil56226 and CAC 57-13 were used as control.

The result of the resistance trial showed only one clone, Co 285 resistant to both diseases. None of the test clones elicited susceptibility to both downy mildew and smut.

Highly significant differences among ages of the clones were observed, indicating that regardless of the clones, percent infection varied with the stage of growth of the plant. In addition to this, it was found out that different clones, have different stages of growth critical for the establishment of the disease.
