Abstract

Conducted from April 20 to May 31, 2001, this farm practice aimed to assess the cultural and related practices in sugarcane production employed by the Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries ARBs) of Schon Estate in Brgy. Mabigo, Canlaon City, Negros OrientaL Covered by the Comprehetoive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP). the estate was distributed to the ARBs through the assistance of the Negros Oriental Institute of Rural Development (NIRD). Inc.

Primary data were gathered mainly through individual and group interviews_ Municipal records were used as source of secondary data.

The ARBs have adopted some ecological practices or farming techniques in sugarcane production. These were: green cane harvesting. use of organic fertilizer, and horizontal planting of canes. Some of the ARBs had also started multiplying newly acquired varieties for later distribution and toe. In the past. the ARBs had almost exclusively planted a single variety. Land preparation was done mainly through the use of carabao-drawn plows doe to lack of financial resources to buy or hoc tractors. The rate and timing of fertilizer application, which are critical inputs set sugarcane production, was variable and highly dependent on financial resource availability. The ARBs did not practice trash fanning. Cones were close to the ground which requires added costs for stubble shining in the ratoon They identified lack of irrigation and inadequate financial resources as the main constraints in sugarcane production. Suggestions on how to in improve sugarcane production Include; conducting on-farm trials and the eventual Adoption of trash farming. cutting canes close to the ground. planting early, regular, and Late maturing cane s anent, in response to milling delays. and prioritizing farm care and maintenance over other off farm growth stage of the sugarcane crop
