Abstract

The farm practice was conducted in Alaminos City, Pangasinan from April to May 2009 to document the farming practices and to provide a design for the Maria Valdez Cornelio (MVC) Techno Demo Farm, and to assess the impact of season-long training on organic farming to farmer participants. The MVC Techno Demo farm has strength and potentials to become a training facility on sustainable agriculture (SA). The demo farm showcases various technologies that could help farmers increase their yield and income. The proposal design for the demonstration farm will help farmers to appreciate sustainable agriculture in the locality.

Survey on the impact of season-long organic farming to farmer participants showed that 8 or 38% respondents are willing to go to almost full organic farming (75-100% of land area), 2 or 5% would devote 51-75% of his land to organic farming, 2 or 5% would allocate 26-50% of his farm to organic farming, and 9 or 43% would use 5-25% of their total land area for organic farming. Even if they earn less on the first trial, respondents believe that they still could earn high profit on the second or third trial of organic production. The training had changed the perspective of farmers on the use of conventional method. The modules of making organic fertilizer help the farmers become aware of natural farming and natural pest management.
