Abstract

The moisture, light and temperature requirements for seed germination of winged bean, Psophoearpus tetragonolobus L. was studied. In addition, the extent and means of breaking hardseeds were investigated using 11 occasions of local and foreign origin.

The Minimum Moisture requirement for germination of winged bean seed is 54%. No varietal differences were observed. Germination is sensitive to temperature but not to light. Optimum temperature range for germination is 25 to 30oC. The extent of hardseeds and winged beans based on accessions studied ranged from 0 to 28%. Soaking for 5 seconds in boiling water and soaking in concentrated H2SO4 for 6 - 8 minutes proved to be most effective methods in breaking hardseeds of winged bean.

The presence of degree of hard seeds varies the length of time to attain the minimum seed moisture for germination thus causing delayed and uneven field stand establishment.
