Abstract

Seed production of three tropical forage legumes, namely P. atropurpureus, C. pubescens, and S. gracillas planted at three seeding rates and three row spacings were studied in 1967, These legumes especially Centro and Stylo were very slow during establishment. Adequate measures should be taken ,4 control woods particularly during the first 5 weeks of growth. Seed production of the legumes coincided with the bi season (January to April) at College, Laguna. Seeding rite. of 3 kgm/ha for Siratro and 5 kgm/ha for Centro were found adequate to give satisfactory seed yield. Sowing in rows 80-100 cms apart is recommended to facilitate weeding and cultivation.

For Siratro harvesting by handpicking is preferred. Centro may be harvested by handpicking or by machine clip-ping. Style appears to lend itself wall to machine clipping. If the seeds will be harvested by machine the seed production plots would be rougued completely of weeds before harvest. Weed seeds will pose problems in seed cleaning. This is particularly true of the seeds commonly growing legumes like Clopogonium, Kudzu, and Mimosa.

No serious pests and diseases were observed.
