Abstract

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to determine the susceptible/resistant stage of cotton against D. gossypina; there-by developing an efficient procedure for mass screening of cotton varieties against the said pathogen.

Different stages of growth served as main plots and varieties. Reba and Deltapine 16, as sub-plots. Squares and flowers were inoculated by spraying spore suspension using de Vilbiss atomizer while mycelial disc was used for five day old bolls.

The result showed that squares were resistant to the attack of D. gossypina with a mean disease rating of 1.56. Flowers and five-day old bolls were both susceptible with a mean disease rating of 3.92 and 4, respectively. Square remained green except for some small dark brown spots but the resulting bolls were free from infection. Inoculated flowers were completely rotten in two days time and resulting bolls showed rotting from tip to base.

Five days old bolls were completely rotten four to five days after infection. they turned black due to the production of pycnidiospores.

flowers can be used as an efficient index for screening cotton varieties against D. gossypina. However, further verification on the mode of action of D. gossypina on cotton flowers on a wide range of cotton varieties and lines must be conducted. Moreover, the pathogen effect of other organisms of the rot complex to cotton flowers and the differences on spore density from time of inoculation to infection must be evaluated.
