Abstract

The study focuses on model development for the completion time in seeding, thinning and pre-milling operations of sweet sorghum as feedstock for bioethanol production. It aims to construct mathematical models for completion time using the establish standard time in these operation given the dimensions of the plot. This also aims to determine manpower requirements and labor cost per hectare. The data was gathered at Mariano Marcos State University at Batac, Ilocos Norte on November 2008. Stopwatch time study was the method used in establishing standard time. Planting operation was divided into three processes such as preparation of land, seeding and thinning operations. The study focuses in seeding and thinning operations. Standard times of seeding and thinning operations are 10.02 and 44.66 seconds per linear-meter respectively. The standard time of turns in planting operations was also established 4.26 seconds per linear-meter-turn of seeding while 4.64 second per linear-meter-turn for thinning operation. Planting operations is followed by harvesting,pre-milling and milling operations. The study focuses on pre-milling operation. Pre-milling has a standard time of 260.4 seconds per linear meter. The model validation was done by comparing the estimated and calculated completion times of different land areas. The developed model was used to project the completion time of different land areas. Hence, the optimal manpower requirements were determined for seeding, thinning and pre-milling operations.
