Abstract

The genotype-environment interactions estimated in maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids included multilocation on-farm strip test from 18 environments throughout the major corn growing areas in the Philippines. The objectives were to determine the need for multilocation on-farm strip test in evaluating cultivars for general adaptations, and to determine which environment the test should be carried out. Groups of 18 environments were formed from the group of 93 locations that were included in the test, based primarily on geographical proximity to the research station. Combined analysis of variance for different environment were calculated using 15, 12, 10, and 8 environmental combinations. Each combination of genotype-environment interaction was partitioned into stability-variance statistic assignable to each genotype. Similarity of environmental response was carried out using cluster analysis of average correlation similarity coefficients. There is generally significant genotype-environment interaction at P=0.01. Almost 50% of the hybrids tested indicated instability across environments. Fifty percent of unstable hybrids had yields lower than that of the standard cultivar (P3228). Clustering of environments revealed that for general adaptation, locations situated farther than 10 miles from CMU. Musuan, Maramag, Bukidnon (environment 5 and 8), those locations not exceeding 30 miles from Ilagan Experiment Station, Ilagan Isabela (environment 13 and 14), and one among the identified residual environments must be included in the next multilocation on-farm strip test. thus, the more number of locations (at least 6) per environment that will be included in the multilocation strip test suggest reliable unbiased of the genotype-environment interactions.
