Abstract

A total of nine (9) farmers in Jaen, Nueva Ecija were studied. Using a case study approach, the study focused mainly on farming practices. 0f the 9 farmer, 5 were, classified as fully, organic farmers. two were still on the transition stage while the other 2 were the conventional to farmers. From high external input. the farmers shifted low external input organic agriculture due mainly to the following reasons; chemicals are expensive; they harm the environment and the health of animal and man; and the farmers are also after for a chemically free products for family's use and for the consumers welfare in general.

In addition to agronomic practices, the cost of production, yield contained and the income of farmers (chemical and organic farmers) were also documented and compared. The income of fully organic was at least 3 times higher than farmers practicing chemical agriculture. income of farmers that were still on the transition stage was at least 1.5 times higher than conventional farmers. Organic farms had lower cost of production compared to chemical farms attributed to expensive chemicals. Yields in the organic farms were almost the same to the conventional farms.

Organic farming was considered laborious because locally available inputs (rice straws, leaves of trees and animal manure) were being utilized to improve the soil fertility. Unlike chemicals, they are convenient to use as they are readily in the store.

Conventional farmers were using HYV's. Thus, to maximize the potential yield of HYV, chemical fertilizers are provided. On the other hand, organic farmers were using MASIPAG seeds believed to be resistant to pest and these seeds do not require chemical fertilizers.
