Abstract

The bio-physical, economic, and socio-political determinants of the agroecosystem of the Iram Resettlement Site, Olongapo, Zambales was documented and analyzed. The duration of the farm practice was 23 days. The author stayed in the resettlement site on a full-time basis to conduct interviews of key informants, do mapping and transect applying the data collection techniques of the Participatory Rural Appraisal System.

The resettlement site is managed by the city government of Olongapo and has a resettlement site committee headed by a site manager from the Mt. Pinatubo Commission. It is situated on the hills of New Cabalan, Olongapo and has a total land area of 100 ha, 70 of which has been designated for agriculture and the other 30 for residence and facilities. Some portion of the area designated for agriculture are under dispute along with some private organizations who lay claim on it. there are 11 sitios with 515 families, 70% of which are Aytas.

The area is generally rolling and mountinous and is beset with problems such as degraded soil, lack of suitable planting materials, irrigation system, and livelihood to sustain the resettled families. Sloping agricultural land technology, bio-intensive gardening, small water impounding project, and other technologies appropriate to the area are proposed. Short, medium, and long term recommendations were given. These recommendations must be applied immediately to alleviate the condition of the constituents who solely depend on agriculture for subsistence.
