Abstract
Avon Products, Inc (ACI) is a multinational company and is a manufacturer of beauty, personal care and hygiene products. One of the Avon territories in Asia Pacific is the Philippines. The manufacturing plant of Avon in the Philippines id Known as Avon Products Manufacturing, Inc. (APMI). One of the volume drivers of APMI is the lotion products line which comprises of about 16% of the total products manufactured in the plant. Hence, its performance and productivity is essential to the company. However, in 2007 the lotion packaging section had a productivity of 90.53% which is below the company's target productivity, 100%. The major contributing factor is attributed to the increase in labor hours through overtime. The increase in labor hours is caused by the increase in time spent in unproductive activities. About 30% of the total production time is spent in these activities, which then decreases the number of lotion products packaged. This then results to the need to employ overtimes so as to meet production schedule. Therefore, this study aims to decrease the time spent in unproductive activities, which will then increase the productivity o the lotion packaging section. To ascertain the root causes of low productivity, a fishbone diagram was constructed. Furthermore, root causes were classified as man, machine, method, material, and environment factors. Amongst all these factors, the main sources of low productivity are method-related and man-related problems. To address these problems, continuous production, stricter supervision, training, and staggered breaks are recommended. Fifteen minutes prior to the start of shift, startup activities should be done. Furthermore, the operators of each production line will be become the team leader o the line. He is responsible to the overall operations and performance of the production line. Moreover, the workers should be trained and familiarized with the machines and operations of their production line. Standardization of lotion packaging operations and continuous production should be made. Meanwhile, the lotion packaging operations and continuous production should be made. Meanwhile, the machines currently used by the company will be maintained. Only roller rails will be procured to replace current conveyor hinges. In these recommendations will be implemented, the company will have a total annual savings of 8.2 M Php. Furthermore, the productivity of the lotion packaging workstations, namely: JIT 225: JIT 226: and JIT262, will improve by 17%, and 21%, r4espectively.
