Abstract

Psi technologies is a provider of outsourced power semiconductor assembly and test services. One of the highest demand product produced in Psi Technologies are To-247 devices. These devices had undergone several operations before it is assembled and tested. One of these operations is the Wirebond Station Wirebond Station has the lowest effective capacity of 2,397,000 units per week among the stations that processes To-247 devices. Furthermore, by May 2008an increase in demand is brought to the company by two new TO-247 devices. These devices are from Cree and Vishay customers. These two new devices will increase the demand by 460,000 units per week making a new total demand of 2,946,000 units per week. Thus, this new demand of product exceeds greatly the effective capacity of the wirebond station. This study aims to solve this problem of the company by increasing the effective capacity of the wirebond station. To increase the effective capacity of the wirebond station, a careful observation of the possible factors in increasing the capacity of the station was done. Factors were group to controllable, noise, and experimental factors. Controllable factors were solve by strict supervisions and recommended controls such as check sheet while noise factors were just identified and not solve to restriction in data and time and human's natural habits. Experimental factors focused mainly in increasing the Utilization Factor of the machines and the number of machines. Five alternatives were set in this study to increase the effective capacity of the wirebond station. This study recommends a solution in preventing the production loss during breaktime. This is by scheduling workers in the station in their breaktime by use of color-coding. When the lost hours in production due to breaktime is prevented, an increase in the Utilization Factor of the wirebond operation can be expected to an increase in the effective capacity of the wirebond station. Furthermore, this study recommends a purchase of a single head wirebond machine. This solution increases the effective capacity of the wirebond station by 2,853,000 units per week and reserving a 648,000 units per week capacity for ramp-ups.This means that the new design capacity of the wirebond station is 3,501,000 units per week. Further, a net present value of ,141.02 can be realized by the company in implementing Alternative B.
