Abstract

The major farm practice was conducted at Crown B Farms Incorporated in Brgy. Calanay, Aroroy, Masbate from April 23 to May 26 2007. The major practice was conducted in the farm to put into practice concepts and principles in swine management acquired in the university; to have a hands-on experience on the different management practices done in a commercial swine farm; to assess the different management practices from production to marketing; and to be aware of the common problems existing in a commercial farm. Crown B Farms is subdivided into two major clusters, the Grans Parental cluster and the Parental Stock cluster. The different sections in these clusters are breeding, farrowing, nursery and growing-finishing. The activities done during the entire major practice included: giving assistance to farrowing animals, manual extraction of piglets, removal of the mucous adhering to the piglets body, cutting of the umbilical cord and the needle teeth, tail docking, castrating, semen collection, evaluation and processing, pregnancy detection, giving medication to sick animals, daily and weekly inventory of the herd. A technical analysis was done to assess the situation of the farm. Recommendations were discussed in an attempt to offer possible solutions to existing faced by the farm.
