Abstract

Hacienda Malacalauan, Inc. (HMI) is a dairy farm and processing plant located at Brgy. Mabacan,Calauan, Laguna. It produces an array of dairy products, ranging from milk-based to cheese and cultured products. The workers in the Cheese and Cultured Products Area of HMI's processing plant often incur overtimes mostly due to the manual tasks they conduct in their production. From May 2007 to April 2008, the average production hours falls around 9.80 hours per day and the equivalent cost due to labor falls around 168 641.10 PHP per year. In order to determine the cause/s of long production times in the area, a root cause analysis was done. Cause factors associated to Man, Machine, Material and Method were derived. After this, CNX analysis was done wherein the cause factors were classified into three categories:Controllable (C), Noise(N), and Experimental (X). The controllable factors derived were: the PR forms are not updated and preventive and corrective maintenance were not applied. These factors were given possible countermeasures. No solutions were given to the noise factors since they are no longer within the slope of the study. Meanwhile, one experimental (X) factors was gathered from the CNX analysis. This is the limited/ small number of workers in the area. Two alternatives-Alternatives A and B-were derived for this experimental factor. Alternative A suggests the addition of two workers to the area, while Alternative B proposes the addition of two burners and purchase of a crisscross cheese and cutter to increase the production capacity of the area and shorten the processing time of the products. Factor-rating method was used to determine the solution to the identified experimental factor. Alternative B or addition of burners and cheese curd was chosen as the alternative to the problem. In order to determine the costs and benefits of the implementation of the proposed solutions, a cost and benefit analysis was made. The cost incurred for the past year due to labor was estimated to be 146 210. 50 PHP. In addition the cost associated to labor based on the established standard time was computed to be 164 783.26 PHP per year. From the analysis made, it was determined that a 28.64% improvement in productivity in terms of labor hours will be gained from the implementation of the proposals and an annual savings of 47 590.83 PHP due to labor costs through reduced overtimes can be realized.
