Abstract

A feeding trial was conducted to determine the effect of avoparcin on the performance of broilers fed low or high energy diets. A total of 144 seven day-old chicks were randomly distributed to four dietary treatments following a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Each treatment was represented in four blocks with nine birds each. Cage location was the blocking criterion. The treatments were: low energy diet, low energy diet with avoparcin, high energy and high energy diet with avoparcin. They were fed broiler starter from 8-28 days and broiler finisher from 29-42 days of age. Results of the study showed no significant interaction effect between the energy level and antibiotic supplementation in all the parameters considered. Compared to broilers fed low energy diets, those fed high energy diets had heavier (P<0.05) body weight and body weight gain at 42 days, lower (P<0.01) fed consumption, better (P<0.01) feed efficiency at 28 and 42 days of age and supported greater income over feed and chick cost. Avoparcin supplementation did not affect body weight, body weight gain feed consumption, feed efficiency and dressing percentage of the broilers but slightly increased the income over feed and chick cost.
