Abstract

This experiment was conducted to study the influence of the two types of farrowing stalls (elevated and ground level stalls) and three sow groupings (individual, by two's and by three's) on the survival and performance of piglets using a total of thirty-six (36) pregnant sows arranged in a 2x3 factorial in completely randomized design (CRD) with each treatment group having six experimental sows. The results indicated that there was no significant influence of both types of farrowing stalls on the percentage of piglet mortality at birth percentage piglets weaned and pre-weaning growth performance of piglets. Likewise, sow groupings at farrowing had no significant effects on the reproductive parameters evaluated as well as the pre-weaning responses of piglets from litters of experimental sows except during the third to fifth week nursing period where growth rate of piglets produced from sows confined by three's indicated superior performance than other treatment groups.
