Abstract

The histology of the testis and epididymis of 26 young native and crossbred pigs were studied. The body weights and other testicular dimensions were also obtained and statistically analyzed using the F-test and Duncan Multiple Range Test. Manifestations of the sexual behavior were likewise noted.

At 2 months of age, the testicular sections of the native pigs already showed the presence of spermatids which was observed only at 4 months of age in the crossbred pigs. In majority of the epididymal sections. The presence of spermatozoal clumps at 3 months of age was observed in the native pigs. Spermatozoal clumps were present. In few epididymal sections of the crossbred pigs at 4 months of age.

Significant (P < 0.05) differences were obtained in all the ages considered in the native pigs for the scrotal width and body weight and no significant differences were obtained for all ages in the scrotal circumference, right and left testes weight, width, length and body weight. No significant differences between in the scrotal width in the crossbred pigs for all ages considered.

The native pigs at 4 months of age was observed to exhibit mounting followed by a series of pelvic thrusts and also the persistent following of the female animal by the male. In the crossbred pigs, at 4 months of age, mounting was also observed but was not followed by pelvic thrusts.
