Abstract

The unit requirements, costs and returns of native tobacco and mungo farms in ten selected barrios in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte were determined in this study. Of the one-hundred farmers interviewed, 51 percent were owners, 29 percent were tenants and 20 percent were part-owners. Of the 0.41 hectare cropland, 0.30 hectare was planted to native tobacco and 0.15 hectare to mungo, as double crop. Eighty-three percent of the farmers planted mongo as double-crop. Labor requirement per hectare for native tobacco and mungo was 176.6 and 27.5 man-days, respectively. As equivalent yield of 724.5 kilograms or 6.3 pardos was realized by the farmers from native tobacco. At P 220.00 per 115 kilogram or one pardo, the total returns per hectare was P1,386.00. For mungo, the average yield per hectare was 1.1 cavans. The price per ganta was P 11.50 or P287 per cavan, hence, the farmers had a total returns of P323.62. For native tobacco, total cost of production per hectare amounted to P1,214.40 or P180.91 per 115 kilograms. The net gain was P191.60 hectare or P39.09 per 115 kilograms. For mungo, cost of production per hectare was P322.10 or P10.45 per ganta. The net gain was P23.47 hectare or P1.05 per ganta. Measures of farm income obtained in this study were: net farm earnings, operator?s farm labor earnings, family farm labor earnings, and family income from all sources. Each were computed as P394.37, P165.34, P572.57, and P1,539.57 respectively.
