Abstract
This study explores the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) to determine a suitable landfill site in the island of Cuyo, Palawan. It seeks to utilize different environmental and socio-economic criterions for landfill site selection with the addition of fuzzy logic for landfill suitability analysis. Moreover, it also makes use of demand analysis to identify the waste generation of the island and provider-to-population ratio for the identified site for land filling. Findings revealed that the there are no suitable place for landfilling in the island of Cuyo. Demand analysis also indicated a 9.6% growth of waste generation in Cuyo island for the next 11 year. Provide-to population ratio was not conducted given that there is no suitable site for landfill development in the island. At the end of the study, it was realized that the unique characteristics of island landforms, including but not limited to smaller land area has shown that traditional waste management practices that are usually performed in mainland communities are limited when performed in island communities. As a result, stakeholders and municipal planners should incorporate sustainable methods of solid waste management to address waste management issues in island communities (recycling, construction of waste-to-energy facilities, implementation of zero-waste programs, and etc.).
