Abstract

This study focuses on the participation of youth in the disaster and risk reduction management (DRRM) in a Barangay Lingga, Calamba City. It aims to identify the roles of youth involved in DRRM-related PPAs in different phases of DRRM and their level of participation based on Roger Hart’s Ladder of Young People’s Participation. This study also aims to provide recommendations to mainstream youth participation in their DRRM related PPAs. Findings revealed that there is youth participation in four different phases of DRRM. The role of the youth in DRRM of Brgy. Lingga was evident as early as the planning stage; by including youth representatives in their BDRRMC, youth were also considered as risk communicators, which affected the locale’s risk mitigation and until the last phase through cleanup and relief operations initiatives. Furthermore, the presence of youth participation in a locale contributes toward a safer, adaptive, and disaster-resilient community. With this, basic disaster preparedness and response training to equip youth with necessary skills should be conducted by the LGU and factors that hinder youth from participating in DRRM-related PPAs should be examined in future studies.
