Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during the dry season of 1978 at the Central Experiment Station, University of the Philippines at Los Baños (UPLB) to determine the variability in agronomic and grain characters of UPLB rice varieties C12, C4-63G, C4-137, C22, C168-134 and UPLRi-1. Two levels of applied nitrogen were used, 90 and 120 kg/ha.

The mean 100-grain weights of the top and middle portions of the panicle were found not significantly different from each other but significantly higher then that of the bottom portion.

Variability in grain length, grain width, and panicle length was as follows: among panicle within hills> among hills within plots > among plots. Variance among panicles was higher for panicle length, followed by grain length and finally by grain width. In the magnitude of variability among panicles for grain length and grain width, the varieties could be arranged in decreasing order as follows: UPL Ri-1, C4-137, C22, C168-134, C4-137 and C12.

For 100-grain weight of the top, middle and basal portions of a panicle, number of grains/panicles, number of panicle and plant height, coefficient of variation was consistently greater among hills than among plots. Higher coefficient of variation among hills was obtained at 120 N than at 90 N for all characters in all varieties.
