Abstract

The root distribution of abaca (Musa testilis Nee.) of the variety Bagacayon at different stages of growth (mature, 16 months old, and 8 months old) was investigated by taking its weight and graphing its ramification. The root were divided into two categories namely; the main roots and the branch roots.

Root concentration for all root categories was found greatest at 0-1 Foot-distance from the trunk and 0-1-foot depth which decreased distance and depth.

Lateral root extension of the three test plants exceeded 8 feet from the trunk and penetration was down to 3.5 feet. Considerable branching of lateral of roots occurred 2-3 feet from the trunk and were extensive at the first two feet depth.

The presence of roots of other plants on a certain area inhibited the growth of abaca roots towards the area
