Abstract

Seed maturation in Los Baños Bush Sitao No. 1 New Era Cowpea and Cowpea #6 in relation to seed weight, size of pods and keeping quality was studied during the wet and dry cropping seasons of 1963-64. Regression analyses was done for all the data obtained.

In Los Baños Bush Sitao, maximum fresh and dry seed weights were obtained at 18 days after flower opening (wet season) and 21 days after flowering (dry season). New Era Cowpea, however, attained their maximum fresh and dry seed weights at 12-18 days after flower opening; Cowpea #6 at 18-21 days after flower opening. In terms of pod size, Cowpea #6 New Era Cowpea and Los Baños Bush Sitao attained their maximum pod size at 12-15 days after flower opening. This means that these crop should be harvested at 15 days after flower opening for green pod yields.

Seed germination was determined and the results indicate that the seeds of cowpea #6, New Era cowpea and Los Baños Bush Sitao No. 1 are capable of germination even when harvested at 18 days after the flower opening, However, for maximum seed germination the pods should be harvested at 18 days after flower opening (New Era cowpea); 21-24 days after flower opening. (Los Baños Bush Sitao) and 21 days after flower opening (Cowpea #6). Delayed harvesting may reduced seed germination particularly in the wet season.
